Taxi from Bikaner to Udaipur — a full day on the road

Bikaner to Udaipur is roughly 470 km and realistically an 8 to 9 hour day including breaks. There are two sensible routes: via Nagaur, Jodhpur and Pali, or via Nagaur, Ajmer and Bhilwara. Both are good roads; your driver will pick based on traffic and on where you want to stop.

For a drive this long the car matters. We recommend an Ertiga or Innova Crysta rather than a sedan if there are more than two of you or if you are carrying full-size luggage — the extra legroom pays for itself by hour six.

Leave Bikaner by 6 or 7 in the morning and you will be at your Udaipur hotel in time for dinner by the lake. We are happy to do very early departures; just tell us the night before.

Breaks and detours on the Udaipur route

A 470 km day is much better with two or three proper stops built in.

• Nagaur Fort — the first good stop, about 2 hours out
• Jodhpur — worth a lunch stop and a quick look at Mehrangarh if you have time
• Ranakpur Jain Temple — 1,444 carved marble pillars, on the Pali route and absolutely worth the detour
• Kumbhalgarh Fort — the second-longest wall in the world, a half-day detour
• Nathdwara — Shrinathji Temple, 48 km before Udaipur
• Haldighati — the battlefield and museum, near Nathdwara

Udaipur and the Mewar region

In Udaipur itself the standard circuit is City Palace, Lake Pichola and Jag Mandir, Jagdish Temple, Saheliyon Ki Bari, Fateh Sagar Lake, Bagore Ki Haveli and the Monsoon Palace for sunset. Two days is comfortable; one is enough if you start early.
